Prayer Guide for Preparing for Pentecost

Day One: Sunday May 24th Ascension Sunday

Acts 1: 1-11In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.

3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

  • Pray for our own personal need of the Holy Spirit

  • Pray that the church as a whole would recognize its need for the Holy Spirit

Day Two: Monday May 25th Expectancy

John 7:37-39 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

  • Pray for our own need for the Holy Spirit

  • Pray there would be a growing thirst for the Holy Spirit in our congregations

Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

  • Pray that we would grow in our expectancy for the Lord to move in our lives

  • Give thanks for what we have seen God do in the past

  • Pray that the church would look with expectation for a move of God locally and globally.

Day Three: Tuesday May 26 Surrender

Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus went to work on his disciples. "Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You're not in the driver's seat; I am. Don't run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I'll show you how. (The Message)

  • Show us Lord what we need to let go of

  • Pray for the strength to surrender the things which hinder receiving the Holy Spirit

  • Pray that the church will surrender and be led by the Holy Spirit

  • Be thankful for those who are growing in their faith

  • Give thanks for the way the Lord has met the needs of the people and the needs of the congregation.

Day Four: Wednesday May 27th Ask and Receive

Luke 11:9-13And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

  • Ask for the Holy Spirit to be evident in our lives

  • Pray for the move of the Spirit to be in our denomination

  • Give thanks for the financial resources God has provided.

1 John 5: 14-15And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will,he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

  • Pray for the faith to receive from the Lord what He has for us

  • Pray with thanksgiving for the ways the Lord will answer prayer and for all God is accomplishing in our church, community, and the world.

  • Pray the Lord will grow His church

  • Pray for renewal within congregations

Day Five: Thursday May 28th Obedience

Acts 5:32 And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

John 14:15-17 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

Matthew 14:22-23Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.

  • Pray for our will to be in tune with the Lords so that we step easily into obedience.

  • Pray when an opportunity comes, we will be able to get out of the boat with Jesus

  • Pray that the church will be ready and willing to move in obedience to the Spirit’s leading

  • Pray for the leadership team(The Session) of the church.

Day Six: May 29 Empowered for Ministry and Witness

Acts 1:8“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

  • Pray for empowered witness in the places Jesus is calling us to go personally

  • Pray for continued witness of the congregation in the community and wherever God calls us to go

  • Pray Whitehall Church will be a strong witness for Jesus in the community

  • Give thanks for the leadership team and volunteers who make the ministry of Whitehall Church possible.

  • Pray for wisdom and provision for the ministries God calls us to do

  • Pray for the wisdom concerning the future of Whitehall Church

Acts 2:1-12 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

  • Pray for the continued blessing of God’s presence among the people and outreaches of Whitehall Church

  • Give thanks for the various mission outreaches which meet within the walls of Whitehall Church

  • Pray for the expansion of the ministries of Whitehall Church
