We are so excited to be starting a new food intiative for some students in the Baldwin-Whitehall school district. This is a pilot program at McAnnulty Elementary and if all goes well, may be expanded to the other elementary schools in Baldwin-Whitehall in the next school year. The program is called Food 4 Kids. It was created when a member of this congregation brought her concern for local childhood hunger and nutrition to the MMO team. We will be packing bags every week that will be delivered to the school every
Friday. The bags will go to students on the free and reduced price
lunch programs (a program that a student has to qualify for financially).
The bag will contain enough food for the student to eat meals over the weekend (when they cannot count on school breakfasts and lunches
to meet their nutritional needs). We need volunteers to help pack bags
at this point, but may need volunteers in the future to help purchase
the food and deliver it to the school. We will be packing the bags here at church at 10:00 am Friday mornings. We are hoping to involve other area churches in the effort as well as groups like SHIM. Specific food donations will be sought as well as monetary donations. Grant money is also being sought.
We thank God for bringing this opportunity to us and pray his guidance as we seek to do His work.We are asking for your help in whatever way you can give it in this endeavor. From volunteers to pack food bags, to material and monetary donations, to your prayers, we are asking Whitehall Church to step forward in faith and help those in need around us.
What has been going on during our COVID-19 Quarantine time?
Wanted everyone to know Food 4 Kids is up and running in a manner of speaking! While we all miss packing with each other, we are excited to let you know that three weeks ago the school district agreed to take our food, pack it and distribute it with its grab n go lunches in the most food insecure neighborhoods (Alden Courts and Prospect Park). So while we aren’t giving our food to the exact same kids it is going to those families in greatest need at this time! It’s comforting to know food insecure kids are not going hungry over the weekend!
We also wanted everyone (especially our WONDERFUL volunteers and financial donors) to know that the Baldwin Whitehall Education Foundation recently recognized Food for Kids with an Award for going Above and Beyond. Chris Skowronski, Nancy Gelzheiser and Cheri Densmore were honored to accept the award on behalf of the program. Instead of the planned gala, the program will be a virtual celebration in early June. We appreciate the foundation’s recognition and support and hope it will help others to find and support our program!
